River Tungufljot

Location: South Iceland, About 100km from Reykjavik, very close to the famous Geysir.
Fishing season: April 1st to September 30th.
Prime time: June, July, September
Average catch: 2-4 trout per day
Average size of fish: around 2.5 lbs, but fish up to 7-8 pounds can be found.
Fishing hours:
June 23rd –August 9th 08:00-13:00 & 16:00-22:00
August 10th – September 15th 08:00-13:00 & 15:00-21:00
Tackle: Single handed rods, light gear.
Best flies: Depends on the pool and river. In the large main river classical streamers such as “Black ghost” have proved effective. In the smaller tributaries smaller nymphs and dry flies work better.
River Tungufljot
River Tungufjot is both a salmon and Trout river. Below Waterfall Faxi, we focus mainly on Salmon, but above the waterfall, Brown Trout is the main specie. Tungufljot trout beat is a combination of 3 small rivers running into one big one. Fish can be found in all those rivers. Size of fish is from normal 1-1.5 pound fish, up to 7-8 pound trout.
The main river is quite big and sometimes is can be tricky to find the fish, but on a still warm day, you can find fish rise along the bank and around boulders in the river. River has both shallow and deep areas and pools.
Trout area of Tungufljot is great for those who like to hunt for Trout, and the reward can be big.
A great way to fish, when unguided, is slowly work your way up river, looking for every sign of rising fish – fish with nymphs or dries. Or, cover water systematically with streamer.
Best time to go to Tungufljot is June – July and August, but in may and September you can always get fish as well.
