River Fossa – Trout beat

Location: South Iceland. 115 km from Reykjavik.
Season: May 1st – late September. Prime time, Middle of June to – middle of August.
Rods: 2
Note: Catch & Release
River Fossá is split in 2 parts – lower part below waterfall Hjalparfoss is a salmon area, but above waterfall Hjalparfoss and up to waterfall Háifoss we have a trout area.
Foss is the Icelandic word for waterfall and in river Fossa there are three stunning waterfalls where you can fish. Háifoss at the top of the trout beat is the second highest waterfall in Iceland 122m. The landscape by the river is breathtaking.
Fossá river system is fly only, catch and release. Single handed rods work well at Fossa, and also small double handed rods at some of the pools.
There are no market pools at Fossa and the trout area is close to 15 km long. Anglers need to be active to look for fish and be ready to use both streamers, nymphs and dry flies.
Fishing below waterfall Háifoss is something that you will never forget. There are 2 ways getting there – you can hike up to the waterfall, from below or hike down from the cliff area above the waterfall. Both takes some time to do. Háifoss was one of the waterfalls that featured in the final episode of the popular TV serie Stranger Things.
