Salmon Fishing in Iceland

Here in Iceland we have over 100 salmon rivers. There are even more rivers, that are not categorized as salmon rivers, that do have small runs of Atlantic Salmon that runs up them each year.

All Rivers in Iceland are privately owned and there is no public Water in Iceland. We do sell limited number of permits for each river each day. Price for daily permits are different from one river to the next.

Season

Our salmon season starts formally at the beginning of June and ends in late September. There are handful of rivers that stay open into October. Fishing starts at most salmon rivers between June 20th and 24th. Rivers are open for around 90 days. Prime time or peak season is from approximately middle of July to late August. At few rivers, prime time is from late August and into middle of September.

Rules and regulations

As mentioned before, all rivers are privately owned. Here in Iceland we fish only in freshwater. It is not allowed to fish for salmon in the sea. Most salmon rivers are Fly Fishing only. Few allow spin fishing or worm fishing, but only very few. At many rivers we have 100% Catch and Release policy. At other rivers we many be able to keep some or all salmon landed.
